UPDATE: Man shot by Albany County deputy sheriff identified

WRGB

UPDATED March 22, 4:30 p.m.

COLONIE --The Albany County Sheriff's Office has identified the man shot by a deputy early Saturday morning as 36-year-old Marcos DeJesus Alvarez, an illegal immigrant who'd been living on Central Ave. in Albany.

Investigators had a tough time identifying him because he was not carrying any information and his fingerprints were not in the system.

Sheriff Deputy Vincent P. Igoe, an 11 year veteran, fatally shot Alvarez while on routine patrol on Watervliet Shaker Rd. after midnight Saturday, according to Albany County Sheriff James L. Campbell.

Igoe was conducting a routine patrol along Watervliet Shaker Rd., in the area between Albany International Airport and the Colonie Police Department, when he came across a man on foot and pulled around his patrol car to question him, said officials.

When the man ignored him, Deputy Igoe got out of his vehicle at which point the man hurled a large chunk of concrete in his direction, according to the sheriff's office.

Igoe then backed up, and the man lunged at him with one hand in a pocked and another behind his back. When the man made a motion toward Deputy Igoe, he fired two shots hitting the man in the torso, according to the sheriff's office.

Sheriff's deputies found no weapon on the man and could not immediately identify him. They described the man as Hispanic, 5 feet, four inches, 120 pounds and with brown hair. They believe he was in his 30s.

Speaking Saturday afternoon, Sheriff Campbell said he could not recall a time when a deputy sheriff has discharged his weapon in the line of duty.

But he said he believes the deputy acted appropriately in reacting to what he believed was a threat to his safety.

The sheriff would not say if Igoe will be on leave or whether he will face any disciplinary action.

Investigators said Monday Alvarez had a wife and five children, all living in Mexico.
