UPDATE: Police identify victim in deadly I-787 crash; all lanes back open
All lanes were reopened on I-787 Thursday evening.
ALBANY -- A person has died in the fiery collision between a tractor-trailer and a passenger car that shut down Interstate 787 at the Interstate 90 interchange for hours Thursday morning.
The crash happened at about 5:15 a.m., when a Toyota Corolla traveling the wrong way in the southbound lanes of I-787 was struck head-on by the tractor-trailer, according to State Police.
The driver of the Corolla, identified as 62-year-old Peter Schissler of Albany, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy conducted later determined he died of chest trauma.
The truck driver, identified as 46-year-old Talikai Ayuba of Albany, was transported to Albany Medical Center with minor injuries, said police.
The truck had been carrying a load of 39,000 pounds of copy and blueprint paper that burst into flames when it hit the car, police said.
Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours as they put out the smoldering paper.
Police are still attempting to figure out why Schissler was driving in the wrong direction of the highway, but say there's no indication of alcohol or drug involvement.
Schissler likely had one or more medical conditions that caused disorientation, but police said they are not disclosing the nature of those conditions out of privacy concerns and pending final autopsy test results.
I-787 was completely re-opened by 4 p.m.
