Iceland volcano eruprtion could trigger another
REYKJAVIC, Iceland (AP) -- Scientists are afraid that an eruption of a volcano in Iceland could trigger a larger, more dangerous eruption at another volcano nearby.
The overnight eruption near a glacier in southern Iceland sent ash and molten lava into the air, and forced the evacuation of hundreds of people from nearby villages. There are no reports ofinjuries or damage. The most immediate threat is to livestock because of the caustic gases.
Authorities were initially concerned that the eruption occurred below the 100-square-mile glacier, and that it could trigger floods if the glacial ice melted. But they later concluded that it struck near the glacier in an area here there was no ice.
