Children taken from 'heavily intoxicated' mom in heatless home
AMSTERDAM -- Police arrested a woman for child endangerment Sunday morning after arriving at her home and finding her heavily intoxicated, and observing her home without heat or food for her children.
According to the Amsterdam Police Department, officers responded to 22 Swan St. after getting a call about a woman apparently out of control. Officers at the scene tried to interview the woman, Toni Cornell, but found her heavily intoxicated, uncooperative and incoherent.
Police said Cornell was intoxicated at over four times the legal limit.
Officers found there was no food, milk or heat in Cornell's home, which she shares with her child. They also observed broken windows and loose broken glass in the area, resulting in cold air blowing into the home and hazardous conditions.
Montgomery County Child Protective Services were called to the home, where Cornell's two young children were taken and placed in protective care.
