Crash Update: 1 motorcyclist killed, another injured | Driver charged with driving drunk, under the influence of drugs
Comments 0A Fort Plain woman has been charged following a head-on crash that killed one motorcyclist and left another injured, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said Sybil Monk, 34, was driving drunk and under the influence of drugs -- with a 4- and 13-year-old in the car -- when she veered into the oncoming lane hitting two bikers head on.
The accident happened at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday on State Highway 5 in front of Lee Publications at the Village of Nelliston and Town of Palatine line.
Both bikers were airlifted to Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown with serious injuries.
Bruce Gilmore, 66, of Wellesley Island, died at the hospital. The other biker, Douglas Estelle, 48, of Clayton, remained hospitalized following surgery.
Monk and a four-year-old boy in the back were taken to Little Falls Hospital where they were treated and released. A 13-year-old male in the front seat was not hurt.
Monk has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Ability Impaired for drugs, Aggravated DWI because of the kids in the car and failure to keep right, following tests at the hospital.
She was remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 property bond.
Deputies said someone in a maroon car seen on security cameras following the motorcycles might have seen the accident. They want to hear from them.
EARLIER:
PALATINE BRIDGE -- Two motorcycles and a Chevy Impala crashed head-on Sunday afternoon.
The crash happened on Route 5 in Palatine Bridge.
CBS 6 stringer Tom Heffernan, Sr., who took photos at the scene, said the two motorcycle drivers were air lifted from the scene. The driver of the SUV and a passenger were taken to the hospital.
There is no word on the condition of those involved.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
