SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS: Greenville, A Travel "Hotspot?"
Comments 0 | Recommend 0It seems the tiny town of Greenville, in Greene county had its "15 minutes of fame", only to see it snatched away before residents could savor it!
Greenville is a community of about 3,000 people, 23 miles from Albany. There, you'll find breathtaking mountain views, bucolic scenes, pleasant people and environmentally friendly energy.
So it's no surprise that Greenville would wind up as "Number Two" on www.tripadvisor.com's "New US Hotspots" List for travel in 2009. Except.....it didn't!
When CBS 6 News checked with "TripAdvisor", they told us Greenville was mistakenly put on the list. They couldn't explain why.
Well, the outrage in Greenville was sizzling like one of Tommy's hot dogs dished up in frigid temperatures.
Owner Tommy Briggs says "That's not fair!" about Greenville being on the list one minute, off the next.
"Greenville's pretty hot, " says Mark Denton, holding a boxful of hot dogs, "They should put it back on."
The man who powers 20 percent of his Greenville business with high tech wind turbines and owns a retro drive-in movie theater there wants to know who beat out Greenville?
The list includes the Poconos, Hawaii, Florida and Alaska. "Hawaii doesn't even have electric!" huffed Mark Wilcox. "Greenville does!"
Realtor Debra Danner says "Greenville should be number one on the list. It's a small town community with small town charm."
The other spots were cited for being environmentally friendly. Well, says Mary Boyle of the "Greenville Booksmith", "Our town park just put in a compost toilet, done by the Girl Scouts. They took up a collection."
So what can you do in Greenville?
"You can look at the pond. There's a park with swings. That's about it," says Mark Denton.
But if you want to meet good people "This is a nice place to visit, " says Briggs.
And some want to keep it a secret. Danner says "This has small town charm, " and lowering her voice to a whisper, she says "only 30 minutes from Albany!"
But perhaps soft-spoken, 10 year old Tia had the best sales pitch.
We asked what people could do if they visited Greenville. Tia Cukierski responded, " Go anywhere and they'll have a good time!"
