Glens Falls native rounds out top 100 'Twitterholics'

If you do, perhaps you follow the likes of President Obama, Ashton Kutcher, or Ellen Degeneres.

Or perhaps 26 year old Brandon Mendelson.

"I have so many followers that I can't see everything" the Glens Falls man says.

He's never been in a movie and never been an elected official, but he's got one extensive fanbase.  According to online records, more than 988,000 people hang on his every word.

Or every tweet.

It's gained him the kind of notoriety he never dreamed of.

The kind he wasn't even looking for.

"I wanted to avoid it," he says.  "I'm low key. The most regular guy followed on twitter."

Brandon says he never imagined he'd be among the 'twitterati' as they're called, but among them he is. He didn't set out to make it happen. He had loftier goals. He was doing a cool thing, he says, and asked Twitter to put him on a preferred followers list.

"The cool thing was we traveled across America to talk about the early detection of breast cancer."

Twitter put him on that list and his followers started lining up.  As he met more and more people across the country the numbers continued to grow to where they are today.

It hasn't all been fun though.  He says it's been like living under a microscope.

He and his wife had a personal tragedy not long ago when they lost a pregnancy.  Brandon wanted people to know why their travels and other plans were being delayed so he tweeted about it.

"We had to tell people. We are 100% transparent with what we do," he says.  "The outpouring of support was tremendous though.  Really touching."

He's doing more than breast cancer awareness these days. His latest effort is to get laptop donations for homeless shelters.  But not everyone is thrilled with his Twitter status.  Some of those big wigs don't why an average joe is among their ranks.

Still he hopes to break a million followers by Christmas. He's even got a challenge for the top dog on Twitter, Ashton Kutcher, who has over 3 million followers.

"I want to race him to 5 million."
