Two local dealerships to lose GM brand

General Motors Corp. dealers across the nation are awaiting word from the company on whether they will be fired. GM says it has notified 1,100 U.S. dealers that their franchise agreements will not be renewed.

CBS 6 has put calls into all the local dealerships and learned that so far two are on the list.

Rose Buick Pontiac GMC of Gloversville was one of the dealerships that received a letter Friday morning.  A spokesman there says the letter said that their contract would not be renewed when it ends in October of 2010. Owner Allan Rose said he would fight GM's decision, and feels confident that he can submit enough information to change the company's mind. Rose said if he can't do that, he says he still plans to stay open as a used car dealership.

Salisbury Chevrolet in Scotia was another local dealer to receive a letter. General Manager Dan Carlton told CBS 6 they were shocked by the decision and they plan to fight it. Carlton said they have hope and does not consider this letter a death sentence.

GM says it has too many dealerships for too few sales and must make the cuts as part of its government-ordered restructuring plan.

The cuts come a day after Chrysler LLC told a quarter of its dealers that their services are no longer needed.
