Fury on Great Sacandaga Lake
Comments 0 | Recommend 0(Mayfield, N.Y.) Opposition is mounting, along the shores of the Great Sacandaga Lake. The Department of Environmental Conservation says the Lake's shoreline, should be open to the public, and now a proposition by another state agency, to make that happen is pending approval. Homeowners and Commercial Property Owners, fear their yards will be turned into public playgrounds for boaters. Up until recently, property owners bought permits. That granted them exclusive access to the waterfront. Under the revised rules, property owners would still have access to the Lake, bu would be restricted from cutting the grass, trees or even putting picnic tables on the state owned land. Northampton Town Supervisor, Linda Kemper said, "Basically what you're doing is creating 126 miles of public beach with no traffic control no restroom no policing no enforcement." Rob Horowitz, a property owner in Hadley said, "As a homeowner it means I will no longer be able to enjoy my property the way I have been able to since the creation of the lake.
Several residents and business owners are vowing to fight this proposal. They're calling their State Representatives and some have started a petition they hope to bring before the Governor.
