An early morning fire in Schenectady leaves 10 families homeless.
Fire crews responded to 923 Francis Avenue at approximately 1:30 AM Saturday morning. Schenectady Fire Department Deputy Chief Rod Rosate stated the fire started in the rear of the building near the stairwell and the building suffered extensive damage. The building will now be uninhabitable and it is uncertain if it will be rebuilt. All residents were evacuated and unharmed.
The Red Cross is assisting the families, consisting of 18 people, by supplying them the basic necessities while these families are staying in local motels.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Deputy Chief Rosate speculates that it could be suspicious.
Portions of Francis Avenue will be closed off until further notice for fire investigation.
