NYS Home Care Registry
07/03/12
There are basically 2 options for families who want/need to hire a aide:
1) if they hire a private aide, there is no special certification, licensure, or background checks required.
2) if they utilize a home health agency, aides employed by that agency will need appropriate certification (or if a nurse, a license). A criminal history record check is required by DOH.
In addition, DOH maintains a home care registry (click here to access) that allows people to check the eligible status of potential aide.
Complaints regarding quality of care can be made to DOH at 1-800-628-5972. If there are any law enforcement issues, they will advise people to contact local law enforcement directly.
