Eleven soldiers and their motorcycle escorts paid tribute Friday to one of their own killed in combat.
A motorcade traveled today from Fort Drum to Shelter Island in Long Island where Lieutenant Joe Theinert was laid to rest.
Four years ago, Theinert was killed leading his platoon of 20 men on a mission in Afghanistan.
They were under fire forced into an area that was littered with IEDs.
Lt. Theinert is said to have disabled one explosive, then while warning his men about a second, the device exploded.
He was the only one killed in the blast.
Each year, soldiers from his unit travel to his hometown on Long Island to meet with his family and friends.
