ALBANY COUNTY -- On Thursday, the Albany County Sheriff's Office announced they have taken steps to enroll inmates in Affordable Care Act health plans.
According to authorities, 56 of the 65 inmates admitted to local hospitals in 2013 would have been eligible for coverage under the ACA because they had not yet been sentenced. They say more than 50 inmates have now been registered for plans, and roughly 400 more are eligible. The Sheriff's Office has been working with the Capital District Black Chamber of Commerce and the University at Albany School of Social Welfare to enroll qualified individuals at the Correctional Facility, and hope to be completed by the middle of March.
Sheriff Craig Apple says the push to enroll the inmates serves two purposes - first, saving Albany County taxpayers money, and second, ensuring the individuals have healthcare coverage once they reenter society.
