The Real Deal: Time Warner Cable Rates Going Up

ALBANY—If you're a Time Warner Cable customer, your bill is going up.  CBS6 has learned that starting March 19th, all customers here in the Capitol Region will see a 6.4% increase on monthly bills from the cable company. 

A spokeswoman for Time Warner Cable says the price of programming has increased dramatically and in order to keep pace and to maintain and grow its network, the increase is necessary.  A notification to customers should arrive in this month's bill.  If you're currently receiving promotional pricing, you won't see the hike until that promotion is over but everyone else will see a higher bill come March 19th. 

Here's how it breaks down, Standard TV services is going from $74.99 to $76.99 per month, the Variety Pass is going from $8.99 per month to $10.  All of TWC's internet tiers are being increased by $3 per month.  The primary set-top box, remote and the Guide are going from $8.99 per month to $10.25, the additional set top box rental fee is being raised to $7.45 from $6.20 per month. 

Time Warner Cable is also adding a new "Broadcast TV Fee" of $2.25 per month.  The cable company says this charge will help defray the cost that broadcasters charge TWC to retransmit over-the-air signals.  In the past, TWC says it never had to pay for the right to retransmit but now they must and in the last year alone the fees rose by 40%.
