ALBANY- If youre trying to stick to a budget this upcoming holiday season, you may want to start shopping early. Retailers are already trying to get shoppers into a holiday shopping state of mind. In fact, some stores have already put out their black Friday ads.
With Thanksgiving falling late this year on November 28th , Black Friday is nearly in the month of December which means if you dont normally start your holiday shopping until then, youll only have about three weeks to get it done. Retailers realize thats not a whole lot of time so theyre not waiting until then to offer deals.
Heavy promotion, great prices, extended hours--essentially what they want to do is make sure it's easy for us as shoppers to buy a lot of stuff for as little as possible, says Ted Potrikus of the New York State Retail Council. Some of the big retailers are already offering holiday pricing because shoppers who need or want to use layaway will have to hit the stores much sooner than Black Friday. The reason that you're seeing the layaway is that we're trying to prepare you for this, your time period is really small this year, start now and that's in response to the economy, says Potrikus who admits there is also something in it for the retailer too, they're starting to use that again as a point of competition, something that had gone away is now back but as you've pointed out, you have to as a consumer make sure you know the rules.
Some layaways have a small fee attached, others are free if you put down enough money but its important to read the fine print. Regardless of whether you lay it away at the store or in a closet at home, it may be at least time to start thinking about that holiday shopping list.
