Sen. Schumer calling for drug take back program rule changes

Updated: Monday, September 16 2013, 07:12 PM EDT
TROY - A push by New York's senior Senator Chuck Schumer is to cut down on prescription drug abuse and theft..

He's calling on the Drug Enforcement Agency to change rules to allow drug stores to hold take back programs..

Schumer says thieves are more likely to raid your medicine cabinet rather than the jewelry box, citing a study that shows over 70 percent of people who abuse prescription pain relievers got them from friends and relatives..

Schumer was at Lindsay drug company along Fifth Avenue in Troy Monday.

Officials in Rensselaer County say they've seen an uptick in burglaries where prescription medications are taken.
