NY Health Exchange Website Keeps Crashing

ALBANY – New York State’s health exchanges opened for business on Tuesday and almost immediately, the website that hosts the exchange was crashing and the call-center set-up to field questions was inundated.
“Today with the launch of New York State’s Health Insurance Exchange over nine thousand New Yorkers, including business owners and individuals, shopped online for low cost health insurance for the first time. Since its launch, nystateofhealth.ny.gov has gotten approximately 10 million web visits, far more than was anticipated, causing login problems for users. In response to these issues, operators at the state’s call center have assisted thousands of callers while our technicians have increased the site’s capacity and are looking into the cause of this abnormally high traffic” says Donna Frescatore, the Executive Director of NY State of Health.
There were similar problems in Vermont’s online health insurance marketplace. Health Access Commissioner Mark Larson said technicians were working to increase the speed of the website servers so they could handle the traffic.
Those looking to shop for insurance through one of the exchanges have until December 15th to enroll in a plan for coverage that begins on January 1st.
