Schoharie hosts 2nd Annual Schoharie Valley Rock 'n' Roll Flood Relief Concert

SCHOHARIE -- Volunteers with the group Schoharie Area Long Term, also known as S.A.L.T., were busy working Saturday morning on a Main Street building affected by tropical storms Irene and Lee.
At the same time, additional volunteers were setting up down the street for the 2nd Annual Schoharie Valley Rock ‘n’ Roll Flood Relief Concert.
"We've got abut 75 picnic tables, 5 food vendors, about 30 plus different types of food," said the concert's founder Paul Locascio.
He’s focused on raising money for S.A.L.T as rebuilding efforts continue.
"A lot of people spent all their savings and they have no more money and their house still isn't safe, sanitary or secure," added Locascio.
All money raised Saturday will be matched dollar for dollar by Fam Funds, a Cobleskill investment firm.
Last year 3,500 people came out to the concert and over $27,000 was raised in just 12 hours. This year, Locascio expects between 5,000 – 8,000 people -- and there will be plenty of food if they get hungry.
"We got 600 heads of chicken. We got 320 hot dogs, 320 hamburgers all donated through organizations," said Imants Shrederis of Barbecue Delights.
Eight bands are donating their time, and organizers also hope concertgoers give what they can by filling all the donation barrels scattered around the venue.
The cash is needed, according to Martin Shrederis, president of the Niagara Engine Company Number 6. Shrederis believes that only 500 people are back actually living full time in the Village of Schoharie. He says for a community of 1,200-1,500 -- it's hard not to notice all the empty lots.
"There's some lots out here on route 30 and people are trying to build a new home, they're having a hard time borrowing money because they lost their homes in the flood and then next door to them there's four, five vacant lots," said Shrederis.
For those homes, and others that may need additional financial help next year, plans are already underway to host this event in 2013.
