Take a Break: Hilly Adler

Updated: Wednesday, March 20 2013, 12:56 PM EDT
ALBANY -- Hilly Adler loves to play the piano.  The 17-year-old from Albany started taking
lessons when he was just 4 years old.  To say it's a big part of his life would
be an understatement.

He's also doing his part to make music a part of
other young people's lives.

Three years ago, when Hilly visited the
Albany Boys and Girls club, he noticed a lonely looking piano in the hallway.
Few people there could even remember where the piano had come from.  Hilly
immediately came up with the idea to teach piano lessons at the club. For
free.

Since then, Hilly has visited the club several times a week
teaching multiple lessons, with students performing in recitals at the end of
each year.  Parents say the kids love it, and are developing more than just a
skill for tickling the ivories.  They're learning to focus better and have an
improved self esteem.

Plus, it keeps them off the streets, parents
say.

Hilly says some of his friends may be off doing other things in the
afternoons, but wouldn't trade his time at the Boys and Girls club for a thing.
He's actually started to consider musical instruction as a possible career in
the future.Take a Break: Hilly Adler
