The Bottom Line: Thruway Skimmer

Updated: Tuesday, February 18 2014, 11:15 PM EST
ALBANY – An important warning for motorists who have traveled on the New York State Thruway heading south of Albany.
A Bottom Line Alert from the NYS Thruway Authority, as officials say a card skimmer was found on a gas pump at one of the Thruway Travel Plazas.
It was discovered at the Sloatsburg Travel Plaza in Rockland County, about an hour and 45 minutes south of Albany.
Officials say the skimmer was found on February 11th, on one of the pumps at the Sunoco station.
CBS 6's Dori Marlin talked to a spokesperson with the Thruway Authority, who says it's unknown exactly how long the skimmer was there - but that according to initial investigation, it appears to be "a short time."
They also tell Dori, they don't know how much information was collected by the device - or how that information may have been used.
CBS 6 has reported before on how thieves use skimmers, to swipe the information right off your credit or debit cards.
The New York State Police and the U.S. Secret Service are now investigating.  In the meantime, officials say if you filled up at that Sunoco station, pay close attention to your accounts for any possible fraudulent activity. The Bottom Line: Thruway Skimmer
