The Bottom Line: Tax Preparer Scam

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:17 PM EDT

ALBANY -- Beware of a last-minute tax grab!

A Bottom Line Alert from the New York State Department of Tax and Finance, warning that if you still have to file your returns before Monday's deadline, you need to watch out for tax preparers who may be looking to steal your money.

The scam works like this:

Officials say tax preparer tells the taxpayer their refund will be $200 - when in reality, it's $2,000.

That's because the tax preparer will pay the taxpayer $200 on the spot - and then deposit the actual refund of $2,000 into their own account.

The Tax Department tells CBS 6's Dori Marlin, they have heard from "several taxpayers" who've fallen victim to scams like this across the state.

If you are hiring a tax preparer, officials say you should have the preparer review your entire tax return with you before you sign it.

Also, if you can, have your refund deposited directly into your own bank account - or sent directly to you on a debit card.
