The Bottom Line: Is that tax notice from the government?

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:17 PM EDT
ALBANY -- They look like government notices, but they're not!

A Bottom Line Alert directly from Governor Cuomo, warning New Yorkers to be on the lookout for deceptive tax collection notices.

He says the New York State Department of Financial Services is already investigating complaints about them.

Taxpayers say they received tax collection letters that look like government notices, using phrases like "state tax warrant notice."

But officials say, the letters are not from the state - and instead, are coming from private businesses claiming to be able to remove debt.

They also say, it is a suspected scam.

“Official" state tax notices will always say New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in the letterhead - so if a letter doesn't say that, it's not from the state.

If you receive one of the notices, Governor Cuomo is urging you to call DFS so they can investigate.  The number for their Consumer Help Line is 1-800-342-3736.The Bottom Line: Is that tax notice from the government?
