The Bottom Line: National Grid phone scam

Updated: Thursday, July 10 2014, 09:47 PM EDT
ROTTERDAM -- It's a phone scam targeting National Grid customers, that's got a new twist.

Here's the Bottom Line Alert, which is similar to a phone scam that CBS 6's Dori Marlin has warned about before.

Rotterdam Police say that utility customers are getting phone calls from people claiming to work for National Grid.

The caller says they need to collect a payment that's past due - but the twist is this:  They say the payment can only be made using a prepaid debit card, like a Green Dot MoneyPak, and then demand the account number off the back of the card.  That way, the scammer can drain the card of any money placed on it by the customer.

Customers who receive one of these phone calls are urged to contact National Grid, to verify their account status before doing anything.

They're also told to contact Rotterdam Police at 355-7331. The Bottom Line: National Grid phone scam
