The Bottom Line: Medical Alert Offers

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:18 PM EDT
NISKAYUNA -- New information on a Bottom Line Alert from CBS 6's Dori Marlin.
First, it was New York State officials with a warning - now it's the Better Business Bureau warning that seniors are being ripped off by offers for "free" medical alert devices.
Peggy Penders with the BBB tells Dori, seniors are getting phone calls implying they'd receive the equipment for free - but then, there's a catch.
"They're prompting alot of engagement from consumers where they were sharing personal information, credit card information, assuming they'd be getting something for free," Penders explains, "But when you looked into the details, [it's] not so free."
"So what's the catch here?" Dori asked.
"They were actually getting involved in a product line that would have a monthly bill," Penders says.
On top of "not" being free, Penders says people were also handing out personal information that they shouldn't have.
She says a company called "Senior Medical Alert" is one of the names that’s calling seniors Upstate.
Officials say if you or a loved one receive one of the calls, don't give out any information - instead, hang up and call them back if you're interested in their product.
