The Bottom Line: Boston Bombing Charity Scams

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:17 PM EDT

NISKAYUNA -- A tragedy like the Boston Marathon bombing sometimes seems to bring out the best in people, but unfortunately, it can also bring out the worst.

An important Bottom Line Alert that if you're planning to donate money toward the victims of the attack, scammers are already out there trying to take advantage of that generosity.

CBS 6's Dori Marlin has reported in the past how the bad guys pay close attention to current events, looking for an opportunity to try to rip you off.

Now, the Better Business Bureau says it does know of at least one charity scam that's already emerged in the wake of the bombing.

The Bottom Line to avoid getting ripped off?

Check out the charity carefully before you give; see if it's registered, because that could be a red flag if it's not; and try to determine exactly how your donation will be used.

One other easy solution: You can simply donate to the legitimate "One Fund Boston" set up by officials, to help out victims of the attack.
