The Bottom Line: Appliance Rebate Program

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:17 PM EDT
Are you in the market for a new washer or refrigerator?
This could be your lucky month!
Beginning today, $3.5 million is being made available to purchasers of new energy efficient appliances in New York.
It's all part of the 'Buy Green, Save Green NYS High-Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program.'
“This
rebate program gives residents the funding to make their homes more
energy efficient, it makes it possible for New Yorkers to spend less on
energy costs, and it provides a needed boost to retailers across the
state,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The Bottom Line: $3.5 million in funding is available.
For an Energy Star refrigerator you’re eligible for a $350 rebate.
For an Energy Star washing machine the rebate would be $250.
This type of cash-for-appliances program has run before.
Mark
Sokol, owner of Northwind Refrigeration and Appliances, a secondhand
appliance store in Schenectady, says the rebate program not only helped
cash-strapped consumers, but stimulated sales and boosted his store’s
bottom line.
“I would have to say yes, it did boost sales. Business
had to be up at least 30% during the time of that junking appliances. I
saw a lot of appliances coming through here. I picked up a lot from
people.“
Something to keep in mind though is that it’s harder to
repair some of the newer appliances because the cost of newer parts is
skyrocketing, according to Sokol.
Even parts on an appliance that is just three years old can be obsolete.
The rebate program starts today Monday,  March 19.
Rebates
will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis for completed
applications, which are now available at www.NYSApplianceRebates.com or
by calling 1-877- NY-SMART (877-697-6278).
The site will list high-efficiency refrigerators and washing machines that are eligible for rebates.
Purchases made before March 19 are not eligible for rebates.
