The Bottom Line: Account Support e-mails

Updated: Monday, August 26 2013, 09:55 PM EDT
ALBANY -- It offers account support, but really, is trying to gain access your account!
A Bottom Line Alert about a vague, yet invasive e-mail going around - which CBS 6 viewer Chris let Dori Marlin know about.
It's sent to "undisclosed-recipients" - from "Support Team" - the subject says "Account Maintenance/Upgrade" - and the body of it asks for all kinds of information, including your name, username, and password.
It also says "your e-mail address is about to be de-activated" and contains a link to contact the "Maintenance/Upgrade" team.
Dori checked the e-mail out against criteria from the Federal Trade Commission, and it turns out, the e-mail does fit the profile of a phishing e-mail.
If you happen to receive it, the FTC says don't reply, and don't click on anything.  Instead, delete the message immediately - and remember that legitimate companies don't ask for that information, via email. The Bottom Line: Account Support e-mails
