Bottom Line: Extra Texting Charges

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:17 PM EDT
NISKAYUNA -- CBS6's Dori Marlin has heard from many viewers before about extra charges that don't belong on your cell phone bill, and it appears that third party companies are finding a way to tack on extra charges.
Rick from Ancram told Dori that he and his wife pay $50 per month for unlimited talk and text features, but kept getting text messages saying that they didn't have sufficient funds to make a call or text.  They called Verizon, their service provider, and were told that it was a third party sending the texts and charging an extra $10 to their account.
Verizon told Dori that they have filters in place to prevent spam messages like the one Rich got, but sometimes one will get through.
If you get one, you should notify your coverage provider so they can aggressively go after the company sending out the message.  You should also notify them if you see any mystery third party charges on your bill.  If the charge is for something you didn't agree to, as with Rich, the provider will remove the charge.Bottom Line: Extra Texting Charges
