UPDATE: Colonie cab driver looking for fare met with shotgun
UPDATED 10:45 a.m.
COLONIE -- A cab driver who went looking for an unpaid fare was met at the door by a shotgun-wielding man, according to Colonie Police Lt. Robert Winn.
It happened at about 1:30 a.m. Friday.
A Colonie Checker Cab driver said a female passenger requested a ride to a home at 18 Van Buren Avenue in Colonie. The driver helped the woman, who was on crutches, into the home.
The driver told police when he went to the door, a man with a shotgun threatened him. The driver then left and called police.
Officers arrived and attempted to coerce the man out of the home. He finally emerged from the house shortly after 3 a.m. Lt. Winn said the man was armed with a knife, but he surrendered without incident.
The Colonie Police SWAT team had been activated but was cancelled less than 10 minutes later when the suspect exited the home.
Police found the shotgun inside the home, along with four other long rifles. The shotgun was loaded when it was pointed at the cab driver, said Lt. Winn.
The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Robert Monaghan. Monaghan lived at the home, according to Lt. Winn.
Monaghan was charged with felony first-degree reckless endangerment, misdemeanor second-degree menacing, and misdemeanor fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
