Man Found Dead in Taconic State Park

New York State Park Police have found 79 year old Royal Sherow of Poughkeepsie, after he was reported missing Tuesday night. Sherow was been fishing in Taconic State Park in Copake, Columbia County.

According to Police, Sherow was fishing with others at Bash Bish Brook when somehow he became separated from the group he was fishing with for the day. According to the time line given to Police, a member of the fishing party noticed him missing around 5:00pm. The Park manager was notified at 8:30pm, who then called State Police. A Search and Rescue team was immediately activated, they searched until 2:00 A.M. when the search was suspended due to hazardous conditions.

The search resumed at 7:00 A.M. on Wednesday morning. Sherow was located in teh Brook, downstream from where his fishing rod was found. He was transported to St. Peter's Hospital in Albany for an autopsy.

Gosh. We went walking there last night around 5:30 - 6:00 pm. Today is Wed June 24,2009. Its 10:00 pm Wed. night, My family and some neiborhood children along with a few friends went walking/rode bikes on the trail last night. We saw a man very close to the bridge fishing when we passed the bridge. He had white hair, he looked maybe 60 ish. to me. He was in the water up to his knees, no waiders, I remember thinking, that the weather has been bad lately, the water can really move when its comming off the mountian down the stream, I saw him actually in the stream he was casting his pole. We passed and he wasnt seen when we returned,but of course no one was looking for anyone. We actually stopped and sat down on the bridge to rest a molment. Then procedded to walk back home. I and my faily and friends are very sorry to hear about the death. Of course we feel very bad. We wish we had paid more attention to details. We send our condolences to the family.

Thank you for your condolences to our family, we are all deeply saddened by the loss of our father, grandfather, father in law, uncle and friend, Royal Sherow. He loved fishing, and often fished at Bashbish. Your observation helps us put together a timeline of what may have happened when. So many people just skim stories like this, and this is someone's husband, father, grandfather, etc, who is so dearly missed already, and we are devastated as a family. It is a balm to our sore hearts that you had the compassion and sensitivity to comment on Royal's tragic death and that you saw him alive in the late afternoon. Bless you, bless you for it. I just read this story. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. How wonderful for him, though, that he was able to enjoy fishing (one of my late granddaddy's favorite things to do) prior to his passing. I hope he is resting in peace, and that you and your family will also find peace and solace knowing people really do care, even strangers who never knew him.
