A Westchester County man was killed late Sunday night while trying to help the driver of an overturned vehicle in Greene County, New York State Police said.

Kevin Ryan, 44, of Mt. Kisco, stopped his car on State Route 23 in Catskill when he saw the overturned vehicle on the other side of the bridge, State Police said. Ryan stepped over the "jersey barrier," unaware there was a 17-foot gap between the eastbound and westbound spans that cross Catskill Creek.

Ryan fell 47 feet to the rocks and concrete below, State Police said. He was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the overturned car was treated for minor injuries, State Police said. It was not clear what caused the crash.
