A 28-year-old man was arrested Thursday night in Columbia County after investigators determined he had broken into businesses in Greenport where he stole cash and damaged property.

After investigating an increase in property crimes, Columbia County sheriff's investigators arrested Duane McEwan Thursday at 11 p.m. and charged him with felony second-degree burglary, felony third-degree burglary, felony fourth-degree grand larceny and misdemeanor petit larceny and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

McEwan is also accused of breaking into a residence in the village of Philmont and stealing $1,600 in cash.

Sheriff's investigators say they also recovered stolen property indicating McEwan's possible involvement in several other burglaries, including at an art gallery in Pittsfield, Mass. and a business in Leeds, Greene County.

Hudson City Police have also identified McEwan as a suspect in a city burglary.

County sheriff David Harrison, Jr., said investigation is continuing and additional charges are pending.

McEwan was sent to county jail without bail, and is expected to return to court Jan. 12th.
