More than 5,000 customers were without power in Albany County Wednesday morning, according to a National Grid spokesman. That number was down to more than 2,100 by 7 a.m.
The cause of the outages, in Altamont, Berne, Guilderland and Knox and Wright in Schoharie County, is still under investigation.
An Albany County dispatcher said an animal got into a power substation and interfered with equipment.
The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District delayed the start of classes by two hours because of the outage.
