NYC students rescued from burning bus on bridge
NEW YORK -- Thirty-five young children were safely evacuated from a burning school bus by workers at New York City's Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The elementary students from Brooklyn's P.S. 5 were on an outing when the bus caught fire near the Staten Island-bound toll plaza at 10:30 a.m. Friday. A Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman says officers and staff used fire extinguishers to douse the flames and removed the 4- and 5-year-old students, their escorts and the driver from the bus. The incident stopped traffic on the bridge's upper level for about an hour. The span links Brooklyn and Staten Island. Paramedics examined the children and adults, but there were no injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
