Comments 0 | Recommend 0The Capital Region will get a visit from Erin Brockovich tonight. Residents from Albany, Greene, Columbia and Rensselaer counties are encouraged to attend.
Brockovich will be on hand to discuss the Larfarge Cement Plant in Ravena, which data shows to be one of the largest emitters of mercury in the state. The community meeting will be hosted by laywers from Weitz & Luxenberg and Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D., a leaders in the field of functional and integrative medicine.
According to information put out by Weitz & Luxenberg, in 2002 Lafarge reported it emitted 45 pounds of mercury from its smokestacks, but testing each year from 2003-2006 revealed the plant actually released about 400 pounds of mercury into the air. In 2007, Larfarge was identified as the nation's 4th worst mercury polluter for cement kilns.
Brockovich will speak at 7 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School Auditorium at 2025 Route 9W in Ravena.
