How safe are the bridges in your area?

CBS 6 analyzed New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) records pertaining to bridges in Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, and Washington Counties.

Based on the October 2009 data, there are 21 bridges in those ten counties which have a condition rating as bad or worse than the now-closed Champlain Bridge. They are:

 

ALBANY COUNTY

Bethlehem: CR 53 over CSX Tracks

Bethlehem: CR 55 over Vloman Kill

Cohoes: Bridge Ave. over Mohawk River

 

COLUMBIA COUNTY

Ancram: Hall Hill Rd. over Roeliff Jansen Kill

 

FULTON COUNTY

Johnstown: N. Perry St. over Cayadutta Creek

 

GREENE COUNTY

Durham: Smith Rd. over Durham Creek

Jewett: Mill Hollow Rd. over East Kill

Lexington: Spruceton Rd. over West Kill

 

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Canajoharie: Incinerator Rd. over Canajoharie Creek

 

RENSSELAER COUNTY

Berlin: S.E. Hollow Rd. over S.E. Hollow Brook

Hoosick: Caretakers Rd. over Walloomsac River

Rensselaer: Second Ave. over Mill Creek

Troy: Spring Ave. over Poesten Kill

 

SARATOGA COUNTY

Edinburg: CR 98 over Sacandaga Reservoir (Batchellerville Bridge)

Mechanicville: Frances St. over Anthony Kill

Mechanicville: N. Main St. over Anthony Kill

Saratoga: 9P over Saratoga Lake

 

SCHENECTADY COUNTY

Niskayuna: Vischer Ferry Rd. over Backchannel Mohawk

 

SCHOHARIE COUNTY

Cobleskill: Shady Tree Ln. over Cobleskill Creek

Richmondville: County Road 23A over Cobleskill Creek

Seward: County Road 63 over West Creek

 

The analysis found that more than 13 percent of all bridges in the Capital Region are "structurally deficient," as defined by a rating of 5.0 or lower on a 7.0-scale.
