NY, VT plan project for Lake Champlain bridge

CROWN POINT, N.Y. (AP) -- New York and Vermont have announced an agreement to replace or repair an 80-year-old Lake Champlain bridge connecting the two states.

New York state transportation department officials say a New York City engineering firm will first do an evaluation of the Champlain Bridge between Crown Point and Chimney Point, Vt., 90 miles northeast of Albany.

Officials say the study will help the states decide whether it should be rehabilitated or replaced.

The most recent repairs to the 2,184-foot-long bridge were late last year, when new concrete pier caps were poured and some other work was done.

About 3,400 vehicles a day cross the multi-truss span, which opened in 1929.

The bridge is owned by both states, although New York is in charge of maintenance.
