The new Black Friday? Day after Christmas
Forget having all your Christmas shopping done by Christmas Eve; many local buyers are scoping out retailers ,hoping that on the day after Christmas, they'll find even deeper discounts than the already-slashed prices they're currently seeing.
It seems come snowstorm, or bad economy, when it comes to shoppers, nobody's crossing Fido off their list. "It is getting down to the wire," says Eugene Dallas, owner of "Sloppy Kisses," a dog outfitting store. "We're going to be seeing brisk sales today through Christmas Eve".
While "Sloppy Kisses" isn't planning on slashing its prices now or after Christmas, many retailers are. Clifton Park Center says people were shopping right through Sunday's snow, but things really picked up Monday morning. General Manager Susan Keegan says "I think a lot of people were forced to take the day off or call in sick," to get their shopping done.
And while they pondered deep discounts of up to 70 percent now, some were scoping out prices for after-Christmas.
"They've already started day-after-Christmas sales now, " says Keegan, "They have to push it, they've lost time with challenges with the weather. I've seen crazy prices I haven't seen since the day after Christmas last year."
If discounts are this deep before Christmas, what will they be like the day after? The National Retail Federation says this coming Friday is being called the "real Black Friday." In fact nationwide, J.C. Penney says it will open its doors at 5:30 AM till 11 PM. They're offering 100 "doorbusters" and that's twice the amount of last year.
Shopper Angela Dorato says, "I'm hearing a lot of crazy sales. A lot of the places I'm going to are saying come back the day after Christmas, there will be crazy sales. Like Aeropostale, they're having a big crazy sale."
Liza Milo who was shopping with her 4-month old son Anthony, agrees. "I'm eyeing everything now and the day after I can pick up what I need," she says. We asked her what percentage she plans on saving shopping the day after? "60 to 75 percent, " she says, "that's a huge savings for me."
The Retail Council of New York State's recent survey found nearly half its merchants are planning on after-Christmas sales to boost their bottom line. And perhaps your family's too!
