Albany School Board to hold special meeting Wednesday
The Albany Board of Education will meet at a special session Wednesday night to discuss the disastrous classroom schedule computer glitch that forced the district to postpone classes at Albany High School.
The special meeting was announced during a gathering of the city's Parent Teacher Association Monday night at the high school.
The new school year was supposed to have started last Wednesday and Thursday for over 2,400 Albany High students. But because a computer error left many student schedules' incomplete, the district gave students two extra days of summer vacation while the schedule mess was worked out.
And although hundreds of students picked up new schedules over the weekend, many arrived at the high school on Washington Avenue Monday still without a classroom listing.
A viewer emailed CBS 6 News pointing to the longer school day initiated by the school district as a major cause of the problem. But district spokesman Ron Lesko said while the 45-minute longer day was a factor in the schedule mess, it was not the only factor.
Lesko called the problem that delayed the start of school for the high school a "disaster." He went on to say the district "failed a basic responsibility to its students..and it cannot happen again."
The school board will meet Wednesday night at 7:00 at the high school to discuss the schedule issue.
