A Philmont man died when his vehicle was struck by a tractor trailer late Friday morning in the town of Claverack in Columbia County.

State Police say 88-year-old Howard Rhodes was driving eastbound on State Route 217 and passed into the opposite lane. That's when a large-body tow truck being driven by 43-year-old Robert Speed of Mellenville slammed into Rhodes's station wagon.

Rhodes was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police say the investigation is continuing, but no charges are expected.
