September 3, 1968 - Schenectady jail staffing shortage

Updated: Tuesday, September 3 2013, 05:28 AM EDT
Taking a look back into the CBS6 archives, THE Schenectady County Jail was having a problem keeping prisoners under lock and key.

The jail reported its fourth breakout in six months on this day back in 1968.

Then-Sheriff Harold Calkins agreed that his staff was not watching its prisoners close enough.

Calkins says he felt part of the problem came with his workers receiving what he calls too little pay.

They started at 85-dollars a week back in 1968. Eight years later, it went up to just over 100-dollars a week.September 3, 1968 - Schenectady jail staffing shortage
