On this day in 1966, Civil rights leaders in Albany, wanted to have a "Festa", a good, old-fashioned community gathering, but Mayor Erastus Corning
refused their request for a permit, and refused to close a portion of
Grand Street for the day
so booths could be put up.
Corning never publicly said why-a practice
common with the Mayor in those days but privately he did tell Richard
Collins, the former executive director of Trinity Institution.
