On this day in 1968,  the USS Schenectady was launched.

It was the 5th Newport class tank landing ship… they were faster and trimmer versions of the landing ships used during world war 2.

The Schenectady helped support u-s forces in Vietnam, as well as operations desert shield and desert storm.

It was decommissioned in 1993, but 11 years later it was purposely sunk in a demonstration of a b-52 dropped laser guided weapon.May 24, 1968: USS Schenectady launched
