June 12, 1966 - Rexford River Protest

    On this day in our history in 1966, a protest by the class of 66 at niskayuna high school.

    This was along the Mohawk river between Schenectady and Rexford on the Old Rexford Bridge.

    The wording on the sign, "no smoking: river flammable", referred to the occasional oil slick that appeared on the water.

    A few years later in 1969, a river in Ohio that flows into Lake Erie dod catch fire, outraging locals who complained about sewage and industrial chemicals being dumped into the great lakes.June 12, 1966 - Rexford River Protest
