July 18, 1968 - Veterans Park

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:17 PM EDT
On this day in 1968, Schenectady's Veterans Park had become a haven for "some young people called hippies."
There were reports those hippies were littering and occasionally taking a dip in the fountain.
They denied it and claimed they actually cleaned the park up.
That didn't fly with Mayor Malcom Ellis, who was looking for an ordinance to get rid of them, and if there was no such ordinance he was going to introduce one.
