August 9, 1970 - 'Cha Cha' comes home

Updated: Tuesday, August 13 2013, 09:14 AM EDT

On this day in our history back in 1970, we caught up with the 1st women's competition drag racer in the world: Schenectady's Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney.

She was well known in our area in the 60s driving around in her corvette-and then drove around in the racing car named "Double Trouble."

Hollywood also fell in love with Cha Cha. In 1983, a movie was based on her life: "Heart like a Wheel" starring Bonnie Bedelia and Beau Bridges.
