Taking a look back into CBS6's archives: the city of Schenectady -- voting to implement its first sales tax on this day back in 1970.
City leaders said Schenectady was in a dire financial situation -- and believed the sales tax should have been used to reduce property taxes.
A Montgomery ward manager at the Mohawk mall didn't like the decision.
The manager said he believed stores would not have moved into Mohawk Mall had the sales tax been implemented a few months earlier.
The sales tax eventually became three-percent.
