Kids Safety and Education: Car Seats

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:22 PM EDT
ALBANY -- The idea of a fourth or fifth grader in a booster seat may seem strange, but it is perfectly normal and lowers the risk of injury to children involved in an accident, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The Academy said that children under 4'9" or weighing less than 80 to 85 lbs. should ride in a booster seat.  Experts said seat belts are designed for adults and if the shoulder harness touches the neck, the likelihood of serious injury from a collision is greater.
"The thinking is if you can raise these kids up a little bit so that the strap is sitting here, then you're not going to get injured," said Dr. Diane Tenenbaum, a pediatrician at St. Peter's Hospital.
New York State Law only requires children between the ages of four and seven to be secured in a car seat.Kids Safety and Education: Car Seats
