Be An Ally
The Be An Ally project was created in 2011 by CBS 6 in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Neil and Jane Golub and Price Chopper. Together our goal is to inform students, families, educators and the public on what can be done about bullying and cyberbullying.
Utilizing the broadcasting power and credibility of CBS 6, the commitment and impetus of Neil and Jane Golub and Price Chopper and the rich informational resources of the ADL, the Be an Ally project is a call to action for everyone. We provide a comprehensive website with information on ways to combat bullying and how to become an ally. We welcome your feedback and hope that you find answers and support here. Together, we can ensure that our schools and communities are safe, respectful places for everyone.

About our Partners:
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has been educating the public to fight bigotry and extremism since 1913. ADL's A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute is a leading provider of anti-bias education and diversity training programs and resources.
Neil and Jane Golub became personally involved with the ADL in the mid 1980’s. Neil’s support and Jane’s tireless work led to the first ever K-12 A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE curriculum, which was adopted by the New York State Department of Education. The curriculum was critical to the development of ADL's anti-bias education program, A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute, used around the world.
Price Chopper has a long history of giving back to the communities in which they operate. Facing bullying head-on was a natural continuation of the work they’ve been doing for over 30 years.
WRGB is the first television station in the world and has been committed to making a difference in our communities for more than 80 years.

• Be a friend. Offer words of kindness and support to targets of bullying.
• Refuse to spread rumors or gossip, both online and offline. Don’t join in when someone is being laughed at or teased.
• Speak out against biased or bullying behaviors that you witness.
• Join or start a club that stands up for targets of bullying and promotes respect.
• Talk to a trusted adult about what you are experiencing or witnessing.
• Notify your child’s school of any problems and talk to them about ways to support your child.
• Discuss and provide opportunities for your child to practice strategies for responding to bullying and cyberbullying.
• Talk to your child about appropriate behavior while online.
• Encourage your child to tell a parent or trusted adult about name-calling and bullying.
• Request ADL trainings at your school for students and staff.
• Develop a classroom action plan to ensure that students know what to do when they observe an incident of name-calling or bullying.
• Recognize and reward ally behaviors when you see them.
• Be a role model and mentor. Set a good example with your own behavior in and out of the classroom. Avoid sarcasm, mean-spirited humor or other behaviors that could be misconstrued as bullying by students.
• Always speak up and take action when you witness name-calling or bullying.
• Provide ADL training on being an ally for your students and all staff.
• Speak up when you witness name-calling or bullying.
• Flag inappropriate remarks and comments online.
• Reach out to targets of name-calling and bullying to show your support.
• Support programs in schools which help students respond to bullying.
• Model respectful, inclusive behavior for the youth of your community.
