Bitter Cold and Wind to Bring Dangerous Below Zero Wind Chills Into Sat. Morning

Strong low presure in the Gulf of Maine through Saturday will continue to cause wind gusts locally from 30-35 mph through Saturday afternoon.  The wind in combination with the bitterly cold air in place will drop wind chills to -15 to -25 degrees at times through Saturday morning easing slightly to between -10 and -15 Saturday afternoon as temperatures climb from morning lows near zero into the low to mid teens. Dress appropriately for the cold wearing layers, a hat and mittens and covering exposed skin surfaces to reduce the chance for frost bite which can develop in as little at 15-20 minutes on exposed skin surfaces.

Stocks finished higher on Monday. The Dow rose 41 points to 16449. The S&P 500 climbed 7 points to 1871. The NASDAQ gained 26 points to close at 4121.

The major averages advanced on todays session following a round of generally positive earnings releases. Halliburton was up 3.3% to $62.79 following its better-than-expected quarterly results. Advanced Micro Devices rallied 11.7% to $4.12 after the chipmakers profits topped consensus estimates. Shares of Netflix were 0.8% higher at $348.49 ahead of its earnings release after the close.

On the economic front, the Conference Boards index of leading indicators rose 0.8% in March, slightly above a projected 0.7% increase.

Attention was also on Ukraine. Vice President Joe Biden is visiting the country in an attempt to push for implementation of an agreement reached in Geneva last week.

Eight of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 were up on the session. Health care was the best performing group. Pfizer added 2% to $30.86 amid reports the drug maker recently held merger talks with Astra Zeneca. Utilities were the down the most today. Shares of Ameren fell 0.8% to $40.66. Financials also were lower with Citigroup off 0.8% to $47.84.

Breadth was positive on the NYSE by 5-3 on issues and 3-2 on volume. Composite volume on the NYSE totaled 2.6 billion shares. The NASDAQ was 14-9 positive on issues; 9-4 on volume.

Treasuries were higher with the 10-year note up 2/32 to yield 2.71%.
